On 19 March 1761, David Thayer, Jr. of Mendon sold property "being the whole of the homestead of my honored father David Thayer late of Mendon deceased" to Benjamin Wheelock.¹

On 4 April 1764, David Thayer of Mendon was appointed guardian of Elizabeth Thayer "a minor of the town of Pomfret [Windham County, Connecticut]." Elizabeth is presumed to be his younger sister, who was apparently living in Pomfret at the time, perhaps with her older sister, Hannah. Josiah Fassett (Hannah's husband) posted bond on the guardianship.²

He was "of Charlton" when he and Joanna filed their intentions in Charlton, 2 Sep 1766.³

He frequently bought and sold land in Worcester County, and per deeds there, was at various times living in Charlton (65:170, 90:254,91:477, 92:485, etc), Dudley (64:556), and Pomfret, Connecticut (167:181).

His last land sale recorded in Worcester County was dated 5 June 1786, when he and Joanna of Charlton sold 36 acres in the southeasterly part of Charlton to Josiah Conant of Dudley.⁴

David Thayer does not appear in 1790 census in Worcester County or in Calais, Orange (now Washington) County, Vermont, where he evantually relocated.

He was still living in Charlton on 6 Dec 1793 when David Thayer, Seth Wheelock and his wife Elizabeth "in her right" all of Charlton, Worcester County, Massachusetts, as heirs of Zaccheus Parks [David and Elizabeth's uncle] of Lincoln, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, quitclaimed interest in his estate. Zaccheus died intestate, unmarried, and without children, leaving a large number of heirs, mostly nieces and nephews, all of whom had a right to a portion of his estate.⁵

He was probably the David Thayer that in 1800 was living in Calais, age 45 or over. A female, age 45 or over was living in the household, presumably his wife, along with two males 16 to 25, and 3 females 10 to 25.

David Thayer of Calais died before 9 May 1803, when his widow, Johanna, was appointed administrator of his estate.⁶

Research Notes:

David and Joanna seem to have been close to John Thayer and Ruth White who were married in Charlton 29 Nov 1797. Ruth had a brother, Elijah White; both were born in Charlton. According to Marcus W. Waite, "The Pioneers of the Town of Calais, Vermont 1781-1800," in the sketch for David Thayer, there is no record of land ownership by a David Thayer in Calais before1806. However, per Waite, "there was a John Thayer, brother-in-law of Elijah White, who owned a small farm in lots #19 and #20 of the 2nd division [of Calais], and it was supposed that David Thayer lived there."

Ruth White is mentioned in the will of Mary (Poole) Thayer, widow of Thomas, grandmother of David Thayer, in which she is called "my beloved Grand Daughter."⁷

Though Joanna lived thirty years beyond the death of David, she has not been found in the census records. Possibly she was living with John Thayer, who was in St. Johnsbury, Caledonia County, Vermont in 1830.

Joanna (Weld) Thayer is buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Saint Johnsbury, near John Thayer, his wife Ruth, and some of their children. John died 18 May 1831, age 72 years, making him too old to be David's nephew, John Thayer, born in Pomfret, son of Elijah Thayer and Anna Cady.
